OUR MISSION
Future global challenges necessitate town planners to better equip themselves with expertise, knowledge and skills to collaborate and design for sustainable place to live, work and play. Urban and Regional Planning undergraduate programme at USM prepares the future talents and skills to meet the industry requirements especially in ethical practice, planning laws and regulations, technical department requirements, feasibility and market study, and development plans at federal, state and local levels. Interpersonal communication and computing skills are essential to craft visual representations of the vision of future cities and to deliver impactful presentations based on validated data.
SCOPE OF WORK FOR TOWN PLANNERS IN MALAYSIA
Town Planning profession in Malaysia is recognised under the Town Planners Act 1995 (Act 538). Town planners are registered with the Board of Town Planners, Malaysia (LPBM) and Malaysian Institute of Planners (MIP). Town Planners play a key role in development control to shape and influence the growth direction, form, function and image of our towns and cities into the future. Development control is a process of regulating the development and use of land such as constructing new buildings, extending existing buildings and changing land or building into another use; for example, from agricultural to residential. Good town planning practices should satisfy the community welfare including health, safety, economic livelihood, social amenities and environmental quality.
CAREER POTENTIAL
Graduates of town planning from USM may practice in the government sector, where they shall prepare development plans of structure plan and local plan, planning guidelines, layout plans, local plan review, development control and planning appeal board. They may also practice in the private sector to prepare development plans at federal, state or local levels; prepare and submit Planning Permission (Kebenaran Merancang KM), and be involved in advocacy planning, project management, impact studies and master planning.
