GIRL POWER: USM WINS 5 MAJOR AWARDS AT USBET 2018

SRI ISKANDAR, PERAK, 15 May 2018 - 6 Universiti Sains Malaysia (USM) students from the USM School of Housing, Building and Planning (HBP) recently represented the university at the 3rd Undergraduate Seminar in Built Environment & Technology (USBET) 2018, organised by the Faculty of Architecture, Planning and Surveying, Universiti Teknologi MARA (UiTM) Sri Iskandar in Perak. According to the Coordinator of the Building Surveying Programme at the School of HBP, Sr Dr. Md Azree Othuman Mydin, the students who are undergoing the Building Surveying and Building Technology studies won 5 major awards comprising of 2 overall Best of the Best Research Award, 2 gold medals for Oral and Poster Presentations and 1 silver medal for Oral Presentation. They participated in 2 main sub-themes, namely Technology & Engineering and Architecture & Planning. The winners are: Nur Aqilah Azahar - Overall Best of the Best Award (Oral), Gold Medal Award (Oral Presenter) Anisah Mat Serudin - Overall Best of the Best Award  (Poster) and Gold Medal Award (Poster Presenter) Nur Nabilah Mohamad Bakhtiar - Silver Medal Award (Oral Presenter) Azree said that the seminar is a continuation of the annual conducts of Undergraduate Seminar on Built Environment & Technology (USBET) since 2016. The event was held to attract more participation from local undergraduate students in Built Environment and Technology fields, in the hope to explore more diversified research areas. This year saw the involvement of 101 presenters from 10 local universities, with all the winning entries from USM supervised by Azree. “The success was the result of the hard work between the students and their research supervisor, in addition to the strong support from the Dean of HBP, Professor Dr. Aldrin Abdullah,” he further said. The 3rd International Built Environment Undergraduate Research Competition (BEURC 2018) is a competition dedicated to all undergraduates under the Built Environment studies, with the aim of providing exposure and training to the students in presenting and showcasing their research studies.  Text: Hafiz Meah Ghouse Meah

USM BAGS 13 MEDALS AT INTERNATIONAL RESEARCH COMPETITION

  KUALA LUMPUR, 12 April 2018 – The Universiti Sains Malaysia (USM) School of Housing, Building and Planning (HBP) recently made the university proud with a 13-medal haul by the students who competed in the 3rd International Built Environment Undergraduate Research Competition (BEURC) 2018. The students undergoing the Building Surveying and Building Technology studies took part in the BEURC 2018 competition organised by the Department of Building Surveying, Faculty of Built Environment, University of Malaya. The medal haul from the USM HBP students comprised of 3 golds, 3 silvers and 7 bronzes which were won in 4 sub-themes, namely Building Control & Surveying, Architecture & Planning, Facilities Management & Real Estate and Engineering & Construction Technology.  The success was the result of the hard work between the students and their research supervisors, in addition to the strong support from the Dean of HBP, Professor Dr. Aldrin Abdullah and Head of the Building Surveying Programme, Sr. Dr. Md Azree Othuman Mydin. BEURC 2018 is a competition dedicated to all undergraduates under the Built Environment studies, both at the national and international levels. Its aim is to provide exposure and training to such students as they present and showcase their research studies.  
This competition follows the core elements of the built environment, which are building control, building surveying, architecture, planning, facilities management, real estate, engineering management as well as construction management. USM STUDENTS MADE A CLEAN SWEEP OF THE TOP 3 PRIZES IN PRESTIGIOUS DESIGN COMPETITION

  KUALA LUMPUR, 28 March 2018 – Students from Universiti Sains Malaysia (USM) have made a clean sweep of the top 3 prizes in a nationwide design competition held recently. Coming from the USM School of Housing, Building and Planning (HBP) and School of Civil Engineering (CE), the students took part in the prestigious 'MSSA-CIDB Open Ideas Competition 2018, the only design competition in Malaysia that combines Architectural and Civil Engineering students in one team. This is the third time that students from USM have won prizes in the competition within the last 5 years, however, this year’s win is more meaningful when USM won the 1st Prize (RM10,000), 2nd Prize (RM7,000) & 3rd Prize (RM5,000).    At the Prize-Giving Ceremony held in Kuala Lumpur Convention Centre, the top prizes were presented by the Director-General of Public Works Department Malaysia (JKR), Dato' Sri Ir. Dr. Roslan bin Md. Taha, who is also the President of Malaysian Structural Steel Association (MSSA). Besides the students and supervisors, USM was also represented by the Dean of HBP, Professor Dr. Aldrin Abdullah and Deputy Dean (Research, Postgraduate & Networking) of CE, Associate Professor Ir. Dr. Choong Kok Keong. The success came from the hard work by the students and supervisors, as well as the strong support from the Deans of HBP and CE, Professor Dr. Aldrin Abdullah and Professor Dr. Taksiah A. Majid, as well as the Deputy Dean (Academic & Student) of HBP, Professor Dr. Ahmad Sanusi Hassan who also contributed in terms of ideas and views. In the coming years, the USM Representative in the MSSA-CIDB OIC 2018 Organizing Committee and MSSA Education Committee, Associate Professor Dr. Fatimah Denan hopes that strong cooperation between HBP and CE will be maintained for USM to sustain the winning streak and continue to be at the top in future editions of the competition.    The competition saw the participation of 218 students and 18 supervisors (Architecture and Civil Engineering) from 7 universities all over the country. 1st Prize Students: Kelvin Ah Kian, Chong Chin Xin, Wong Chun Heen & Yasirah M.
