Omar Osman, is currently the Deputy Vice-Chancellor, Universiti Sains Malaysia in charge of Student Affairs and Development since March 2007.  Omar was also formerly the Director of Corporate and Sustainable Development Division, Universiti Sains Malaysia from 2005-2007, a division in the university entrusted with the coordination of USM’s strategic moves in the field of higher education including, the secretariat for the Regional Centre of Expertise Penang [RCE Penang] on Education for Sustainable Development and coordinates the activities related to the healthy campus programme.  He is also currently a Professor in Project Management at the School of Housing Building and Planning, USM and teaches and supervises students in construction project management at the postgraduate level.  He is also currently an alternate Director of USM to METEOR Sdn. Bhd. [Open University Malaysia].

 He was also the Chairman of Malaysian University Sports Council (MASUM) [2008 – 2009].  Currently also the Chairman of ASEAN University Sports Council (AUSC) [2008 – 2010].

 Omar Osman began his career in USM in 1989, after graduating with Ph.D. in Project Management from Heriot-Watt University, United Kingdom.  He also holds B.Sc. Degree in Quantity Surveying and M.Sc. in Construction Management.  He became a Professor in October 2008.

In the field of ESD, he works together with a group of academicians to conduct the first ever Regional Workshop on Education for Sustainable Development and USM was recently recognised as the first seven Regional Centre of Expertise on Education for Sustainable Development by the United Nations University to spearhead ESD in the region.  He continues to be active in research and consultancy work on project management and ESD and travels widely in the process of learning for sustainability.

 In the areas of strategic planning, Omar was involved directly in a number of strategic moves made by USM since 2004, including the Research University Planning, the 9th Malaysia Plan development planning, the APEX University planning.  Omar is also actively involved in training and human resource development especially in students’ development.

Omar has published a number of books, including on the construction management (in Malay), the emerging governance and economic issues in construction industry, the education for sustainable development in higher education institutions and also is planning another book on human resource development in USM.
