Dr Ahmad Hilmy started his career as an assistant lecturer with the Faculty of Civil Engineering, Universiti Teknologi Malaysia, Kuala Lumpur in 1983. He completed his Masters degree in 1986 and his PhD in 1995. He joined the private sector as a consultant from 1994 to 2004 before returning to be a lecturer with Universiti Teknologi MARA, Penang. He has translated 2 books into Bahasa Malaysia - Salter's Traffic Engineering - Problems and Solutions and Bruton's Introduction to Transport Planning. He has both national and international consultancy experiences in Traffic Management, Transport Planning and Local Plan Studies. He joined the School of Housing, Building and Planning (HBP), USM in March 2009.
