Professional Membership   Assoc. Prof. Sr. Dr. Mohd Zailan Sulieman is a Senior Lecturer in Building Surveying within the School of Housing, Building and Planning and my areas of expertise are advance material technology of concrete, building maintenance , building pathology and quality assessment for building construction work. I am a Technical Manager and Signatories, HBP testing Unit (HBPTU). This laboratory is accredited in accordance with the recognized International Standard ISO/IEC 17025:2005 and conditions governing the Skim Akreditasi Makmal Malaysia (SAMM), the Laboratory Accreditation Scheme of Malaysia. I was also one of the committee members who developed and published Construction Industry Standard, CIS 7:2006, Quality Assessment System for Building Construction Work (QLASSIC) and a Member of the Building Surveying Division and registered with the Royal Institution of Surveyors, Malaysia (RISM). I was also appointed Committee Member of the RISM Education & Accreditation Board and Committee Member to the Junior Organization Sub-Committee.
Personal Details

My initial research focused more on building material technology in the development of infrastructure and it has expanded to other areas in building survey that are related to risk control and building performance which are building fire audit, building defect and diagnosis. This is to meet the needs and also to reflect the growth of the industry in this country. I have been involved in research activities at the university and national levels. So far, I have received a total of eight research grants at both university and national levels. I have held four research grants as the principal investigator and four other grants as a co-researcher. Being an active researcher, I have produced over fifty research publications of different types within nine years of service in USM. My work has been published in refereed national and international journals, E-journals and conference proceedings. I have also been referred to by some researchers throughout the world based on my published papers, which portrays a hard earned recognition for my niche research area as not many studies have been done comprehensively in the region. Having presented papers at various international conferences, I have expanded my research network and increased my knowledge on contemporary issues pertaining to construction materials and building survey. One of my key areas, sustainable building, fits well within the university’s aspiration of becoming a sustainability-led institution of higher education that integrates sustainable development into the educational system in order to nurture future generations to embrace future values of ecological protection, resource conservation, and human development based on equity, accessibility, affordability and quality.
