Assoc. Prof. Sr Ts Dr. Md Azree Othuman Mydin attained his Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) degree in Civil Engineering from the University of Manchester, United Kingdom in the year 2010. This followed both a Bachelor of Science (Building Technology) and a Master of Science (Building Technology) that were earned in 2004 & 2005 respectively from Universiti Sains Malaysia. Before joining Universiti Sains Malaysia as a lecturer, he has worked with Penang Development Corporation Consultancy (PDCC) as a Civil and Structural Engineer; completing numerous successful projects with PDC, PDC Properties, Techware and a few more civil engineering companies from year 2005 until 2007. His specialization lies in the area of lightweight foamed concrete technology, concrete structures assessment, building construction, building pathology and Industrialised Building System.

Up to date, he has secured 4 FRGS grants, 5 RUI grants, 3 short term grants and 1 incentive grant (total of 13 grants; 5 as a principal researcher; 8 as co-researcher). The total amount of grants approximately RM1.08million. In terms of publication, plenty of his journal papers have been published in international journals in order to disseminate knowledge to a wider readership. Since 2010, he has published more than 150 research papers indexed in ISI and scopus & more than 100 papers in other databases. In addition, he has been actively involved as Editor for books and Proceedings in which he has published 10 books and 8 proceedings related to building material and construction technology. Moreover, he has presented more than 120 papers at local & international conferences. Through publications, he has been able to generate a wider network and frequently discuss the topic with fellow researchers from other countries. His current h-index is 15 and he has achieved 505 total citations of 905 since 2010. He has also been referred by fellow peers throughout the world based on his published papers.

In terms of supervision, he is currently supervising 6 PhD and MSc by Research students. Two PhD student under his supervision had been successfully graduated in the year 2018 and 2015 and 4 MSc by Research students have also passed with flying colours in the year 2014, 2015, 2019 and 2021 respectively. He also has supervised 6 masters-by-course students and more than 60 final year undergraduate research students conducting their final year thesis.

For his perseverance and dedication towards research, publication and teaching and continuous support in the school’s activities, he was one of the recipients of the USM Excellent Service Award in 2021 & 2012. In 2013 he has been chosen to receive Tokoh Ikon Belia Pulau Pinang 2013 which has been awarded by Prime Ministry Department of Malaysia through Penang Bumiputera Development Council. His research and publication have also been recognized by several bodies and he was selected to receive some awards at national & international level (Research Excellence Award 2014 awarded by Building Surveying Junior Organization of Royal Institution of Surveyors Malaysia; Novelty and Research Award 2016 awarded by Islamic World Network For Environmental Science & Technology (IWNEST) and Research Excellence Award 2016, awarded by Malaysian Association of Registered Building Surveyors).

He believes that involving the industry is very important for an academician to be excelled in teaching and research. Hence he took a challenge to become Head Investigator for detailed engineering building appraisal, investigation and assessment for Penang Port Sdn. Bhd. Main Office Building at Pesara King Edward, Swettenham Pier Cruise Terminal. He has also led another structural assessment project for Godown No. 5 Pesara King Edward, Swettenham Pier Cruise Terminal, Penang Malaysia. With his expertise in lightweight foamed concrete, he has been involved in training on Production of Foamed Concrete using the Portafoam Machine. The pieces of training are given for local and international companies.
