Professor Ghafar has meticulously conserved many heritage buildings in Malaysia, and is currently lecturing at the Universiti Sains Malaysia, Penang. He was seconded as the Deputy Commissioner of Heritage at the Department of National Heritage Malaysia from 2009-2012. He has published his numerous researches in books and journals; and has shared his wide experience and knowledge at international meetings and conferences including Islamic Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation (ISESCO) and UNESCO World Heritage Committee meetings. He has been a member of the Penang City Council Technical Review Panel (TRP) for George Town World Heritage Site since 2010, the International Correspondent from Malaysia for Asia-Pacific Cultural Centre for UNESCO (ACCU Nara Office), Japan since 2008; and the National Heritage Council, Malaysia since 2014. He is a registered building conservator under the Department of National Heritage, Malaysia. For his contribution to the conservation of built heritage, Professor Ghafar has received the Historic Mosques Preservation Award from Saudi Arabia in 1999
