Dr. Firzan Aziz is a lecturer and researcher at the School of Housing, Building and Planning (HBP), Universiti Sains Malaysia (USM). Prior to joining USM, he was the creative director of a Penang-based design firm that runs interior design, renovation, architectural and construction services. With the funding under the Academic Staff Training Scheme (ASTS) programme by USM and the Malaysian Government, Dr. Firzan Aziz successfully completed his doctoral research focusing on conservation evaluation of cultural built heritage within UNESCO World Heritage Sites. His areas of interest include:

  • Interior architecture: spatial design, building renovation, end-users’ psychology & professional practice.
  • Building evaluation: Post-Occupancy Evaluation (POE) & Post-Conservation Evaluation (PCE).
  • Built heritage conservation: interior preservation & adaptive reuse of historic museum.
  • Minimalism philosophy & practice: spatial organisation, design simplification & physical decluttering process.

  • In 2013, Dr. Firzan Aziz became a recipient of the Erasmus Mundus scholarship to undergo a PhD Exchange Programme at University College Dublin (UCD), Ireland.
  • In 2015, Dr. Firzan Aziz was awarded the scholarship by the Malaysian Evaluation Society (MES) to undergo an evaluation course (the very first of its kind in Malaysia) at the Malaysian University of Science and Technology (MUST).
